How to Mop Floors Properly — And Why Most People Do It Wrong
Most people push a mop back and forth across their floor, wring it out a couple of times and call it clean. But if your floors still look dull or streaky afterwards, you're probably making one of the most common mopping mistakes — and it's an easy fix.
Whether you've got hardwood, laminate, tile or vinyl floors, this guide covers the right technique for each surface — plus the one upgrade that makes the whole job faster, easier and more effective. Wish granted. 🧞♂️
🪔 Mop Smarter, Not Harder
The WSGenie Spin Mop and Bucket — built for UK homes, 360° spinning head, self-wringing bucket.
Using too much water. Excess water seeps into grout, laminate joints and hardwood — causing warping over time. A damp mop, not a wet one.
Not sweeping first. Mopping over loose dirt just moves grime around. Always sweep or hoover before you mop.
Using dirty water. Mopping with grey water makes your floors dirtier. Change the water halfway through.
Mopping yourself into a corner. Always start at the far end and work backwards toward the door.
Sweep or Hoover First — Always
Mopping over crumbs, dust or pet hair just creates a muddy paste that smears across your floor. A quick sweep takes 2 minutes and makes your mop water last twice as long.
Fill Your Bucket with Warm (Not Hot) Water
Hot water can damage certain floor finishes and warp laminate. Add the correct amount of floor cleaner for your floor type — less is more, a capful in a full bucket is usually enough.
The WSGenie Spin Mop — self-wringing bucket gives you perfect moisture every time
Wring Out Properly — Damp, Not Wet
Your mop should be damp enough to clean but not dripping. The WSGenie spin mop wringer gives you perfect moisture control — press down to wring, release to apply.
For laminate floors, add a splash of white vinegar to your mop water instead of floor cleaner — cleans without leaving residue and gives a brilliant shine. Like magic.
Mop in an S or Figure-8 Pattern
Don't push the mop straight back and forth — this leaves streak lines. Move in a slow S-shape, slightly overlapping each pass. This lifts dirt rather than pushing it to the edges.
Work Backwards From the Far End
Start at the corner furthest from the door and work your way back so you never step on clean floor. Change your mop water when it turns visibly grey.
Let the Floor Air Dry Fully
Don't walk on the floor until it's fully dry — this is where most streaks come from. Open a window to speed things up. A dry microfibre mop pass at the end removes last moisture and leaves a brilliant finish.
